Caption

Caricature of Charles Lyell (1797-1875), British geologist. This satirical pen-and-ink cartoon dates from 1830 and is by the British geologist Henry Thomas De la Beche (1796-1855). It is titled 'Awful Changes' and depicts Charles Lyell (centre) as 'Professor Ichthyosaurus' examining a human skull. This satirised Lyell's theory of cyclical changes by depicting the re-emergence of once-extinct intelligent marine reptiles to debate the fossil remains of extinct humans. For the published artwork, see C010/0354.
