Peak oil, conceptual image. This term refers to the point when large reserves of new oil are no longer found and oil production starts to decline from its peak. Some analysts say the peak oil point has already passed, while others say it will arrive at some point in the future. Once oil reserves decline, either alternative fuel and power technologies will need to make up the shortfall, or energy consumption will need to be cut.
