Fata Morgana mirage, Nunavut, Canada. A Fata Morgana, or superior mirage, is an optical phenomenon caused by light passing through a region where two layers of air at different temperatures meet. The result is a tremendously distorted view of an object in the far distance. In this image, pack ice is seen distorted and appears much taller than in reality.
