Gum inflammation. Clinical view of the teeth and gums of a patient with necrotising ulcerative gingivitis. This is tissue dying and ulcers forming in a severe case of inflammation of the gums. This condition is usually caused by poor dental hygiene where dental plaque (bacterial biofilms) leads to swollen and sore gums. If not treated, the condition can lead to periodontitis and tooth loss. A retractor is being used to keep the lips away from the teeth.
