Treated gum inflammation. Clinical view of the teeth and gums of a patient following treatment for gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). This usually involves mechanical cleaning of the teeth and gums to remove deposits of plaque and tartar. Gingivitis is usually caused by poor dental hygiene where dental plaque (bacterial biofilms) leads to swollen and sore gums. If not treated, the condition can lead to periodontitis and tooth loss. A retractor (left and right) is being used to keep the lips away from the teeth.
