Grand Canal, Venice, with buildings and docks lining the banks. Venice is a city of islands and canals in a lagoon in what is now north-eastern Italy. It was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and today is a popular tourist destination. At left is the Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti, which was acquired in 1999 by the Venetian Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts. The palace dates from 1565, but the current style is Venetian Gothic and dates from the 19th century.
