Galileo GIOVE-A satellite launch. Artwork of the launch on a Soyuz-FG rocket and Fregat booster, of the first Galileo test navigation satellite. Initially known as GSTB-V2/A (Galileo System Test Bed Version 2), it is now known as GIOVE-A (Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element). The Galileo satellites, being built and launched by the European Union and the European Space Agency, will form part of a network of 30 satellites orbiting the Earth. This network will be used for car, train and aircraft guidance, rescue services, and road use taxation. It is scheduled to begin operating by 2014. This launch took place on 28 December 2005.
