Water boatman. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the underside of a common water boatman (Notonecta glauca). This aquatic freshwater insect is also known as a backswimmer because it swims upside-down on the surface of the water. It is a predator, feeding on small aquatic animals such as tadpoles, small fish and invertebrates. Magnification x15 when printed 10cm wide.
