City ambulance, shown in cutaway form to reveal its interior with a stretcher and bed for the patient. This early ambulance would have been drawn by horses, with the driver sitting on the external seat at left. The first hospital-based ambulance services were established in the 1860s. This ambulance includes the red cross symbol on the side and on a flag, long with a lamp next to the flag. Artwork from the eighth volume (second period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
