Weather radar display. Weather radar detects rainfall by sending out pulses of microwaves that are detected as they are reflected from rain drops. The Doppler effect allows both the position and movement of the rain to be mapped. The screen is displaying heavy rainfall over north-western Europe, with the UK at upper left. The rainfall is colour-coded, from red (high) to blue (low). This data is from a radar station being operated by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. These readings were taken at 09:00 on 3 February 1990.
