Stevenson screen thermometers. When closed, the wooden slats screen out rain and direct sunlight and allow air to circulate. Seen here are both standard thermometers and electrical resistance thermometers (metal rods). At right, they are covered with a wet fabric to record the wet temperature. At left, they are recording the dry temperature. Comparing the two gives a measure of humidity. There are also two horizontal maximum and minimum thermometers. This equipment is being operated by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service.
