IVF zygote. Light micrograph of a fertilised egg (zygote) created by in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The male and female pronuclei are seen making contact with each other (seen as clear circles within the zygote). The zygote will develop into and embryo that will be implanted in the patient's uterus. Several embryos are usually implanted to give the greatest chance of a successful pregnancy. However, this can result in multiple births. IVF allows infertile couples to conceive a child.
