Carbon dioxide test. Student pipetting carbon dioxide gas into lime water which turns cloudy. The lime water is saturated calcium hydroxide solution (Ca(OH)2) which reacts with carbon dioxide (CO2) to precipitate solid calcium carbonate (CaCO3). See C017/7774 for the collection of this gas during a reaction between hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate.
