Blood pressure measurement. Sphygmomanometer being used by a nurse to measure a patient's blood pressure. An inflatable cuff has been placed around the patient's upper arm, and the digital display (lower centre) records the pressure in the cuff. The cuff is inflated until it cuts off the blood flow, and is then slowly deflated while monitoring the patient's elbow pulse. When pulsing blood flow resumes, the reading is showing systolic pressure. When smooth blood flow resumes, the reading is of dystolic pressure.
