Solvent-based extraction. Student using a separating funnel to separate two liquids, one clear and one yellow. The immiscible liquids were initially mixed, but have formed two distinct layers after being allowed to stand for a time in an upright position. The valve is here being opened to allow the lower layer (the clear liquid) to drain into the beaker. This is often done to separate a mixture of reaction products in organic and aqueous (water-based) solvents, a process called extraction.
