Placental villus. Artwork of a section through part of a placenta showing a chorionic villius (centre). The villus contains foetal blood vessels and is bathed in maternal blood. The placenta surrounds the foetus in the womb. It provides the foetus with nourishment, eliminates waste products and exchanges respiratory gases. Villi provide a large surface area for these exchanges.
