Distillation apparatus. Distillation involves slowly boiling a liquid mixture (centre, pear-shaped flask) to boil off a liquid component known as the distillate. The condenser (centre right) is cooled by water, causing the distillate to condense and be collected in the conical flask (lower right). If there are several liquid components in the mixture with different boiling points, they can be separated by fractional distillation using a more complex apparatus (see C010/9642).
