Robert John Strutt, 4th Baron Rayleigh, (1875-1947), British physicist. Strutt's early work was in radioactivity and he wrote one of the first books on the subject. He is best known for estimating the age of minerals through the measurement of their radium and helium content, and for producing active nitrogen by subjecting pure nitrogen to an electric discharge. He also furthered his father, John Strutt's work on Rayleigh scattering, which accounts for the blue colour of the sky.
