Neanderthal skull. Museum curator working on a display of a cast of a skull of Neanderthal man (Homo neanderthalensis). This specimen was discovered in a cave at Sima de Los Huesos, Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain. It has been dated to around 400,000 years ago. When first discovered this skull was attributed to H. heidelbergensis, however some of its features are transitional between that species and H. neanderthalensis leading to debate over the correct classification.
