From left to right are: Proconsul sp., an extinct primate that lived between 23 and 5 million years ago; Homo heidelbergensis (Broken Hill 1 skull, from Zambia), which lived between 600,000 and 250,000 years ago; and Homo neanderthalensis (Gibraltar 1, from Forbes Quarry), which lived between 230,000 and 29,000 years ago.
