Sentinel-3 satellite, artwork. This Earth observation satellite is being developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) for the European Global Monitoring for Environment and Security programme (GMES). This satellite follows on from the Envisat programme. Its objective is to measure sea-surface topography using radar altimetry, to measure the temperature of sea and land surfaces using an advanced visible-thermal radiometer, and to record the colour of sea and land with a visible-light spectrometer. Six Sentinel satellites, each covering a range of tasks, are planned for launch between 2013 and 2020.
