Oceanic depth chart. This chart shows the depths recorded in August 1873 the Atlantic Ocean around St Paul's Rocks (part of the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago). These soundings and temperature readings (isothermal lines) were taken during the voyage of HMS Challenger (1872-1876). This scientific expedition, organised by the Royal Society, spent four years surveying the world's oceans. It effectively founded the science of oceanography, with these initial results being followed later by more detailed studies.
