Helicoplacoid fossil. This specimen (left) is seen with a latex cast (right). Helicoplacoids were one of the first groups of echinoderms to appear in the fossil record. This one dates from the Lower Cambrian (around 510 to 540 million years ago), and was found in California, USA.
