Australopithecus and Homo habilis skulls. Both these specimens of early human species were found in Bed 1 at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. At left is the OH5 specimen of Australopithecus boisei, and at right is the OH24 specimen of Homo habilis. Australopithecus boisei is now called Paranthropus boisei, and lived between 2.6 and 1.2 million years ago. Homo habilis lived between 2.3 and 1.4 million years ago. The displays shown here are plaster casts of the original fossils.
