Caption

Intestinal villi. Fluorescence deconvolution micrograph of a section through intestinal tissue showing details of the villi. Cellular proteins are highlighted with fluorescent markers. The villi are folds in the intestines that increase the surface area for the absorption of food nutrients by the smaller microvilli on their surface. This close-up shows the microvilli and the glycocalyx (glycoprotein) covering them.
