Magnesium reacting with water. Magnesium metal (grey blocks) reacting with water. The reaction produces bubbles of hydrogen gas and soluble magnesium hydroxide. The equation for this reaction is: Mg + 2H2O ---> Mg(OH)2 + H2 The magnesium hydroxide dissolves in the water, forming a colourless alkaline solution.
