Edward Gibbon (1737- 1794). Historical engraving of the English historian, member of parliament and supporter of the slavery abolition movement Edward Gibbon. Gibbon was educated first at Oxford University, England, and later at Lausanne, Switzerland. In 1764, during a visit to Rome, Gibbon decided to write about the city's history. Gibbon named his work The decline and fall of the Roman Empire. The last of six volumes was published in 1788. The first volume contained scepticism about early Christianity, producing an outcry at the time. Gibbon was constantly ridiculed for his style of dress and appearance.
