Gian Vincenzo Pinelli (1535-1601), Italian humanist and mentor of Galileo. Pinelli is most famous for his lifetime of correspondence with most of the intellectual giants of Europe. He built a private library which, by the time of his death, contained around 8, 500 books and hundreds of manuscripts. Pinelli especially loved optics and he mentored the young Galileo Gallilei, giving him access to the then unpublished works of Ausonio and Moleto. In later life Pinelli developed an interest in plants, and was one of Europe's first botanists. Published in 'Vita Ioannis Vincentii Pinelli' by Paulo Gualdo (1607).
