Ageing skin. Computer artwork of sections through human skin, showing it's appearance as it ages (from top to bottom). Elastin (red) and collagen (blue) in the skin's dermis (pink) break down. This is due to decreases in the amount made by the body and environmental damage (white spheres), such as sun exposure and smoking. The epidermis (beige), which also contains elastin and collagen, becomes thinner and wrinkles and folds form in the surface.
