Knuckle joint replacement surgery. Close-up of the excised bony surface of the head of a patient's metacarpal (hand bone) showing the rough surface due to osteoarthritis. This tissue was removed from a patient's hand during surgery to replace two arthritic knuckle joints with a prosthetic implant. The head of the metacarpals and phalanges (finger bones) were replaced with a pyrocarbon implant.
