Caption

Group of pamphlets detailing the death of captain Allan Gardiner during a trip to Patagonia, and calling for a Christian Mission in Patagonia among the natives of Tierra del Fuego. On the right are pictures from Fitzroy's book of the Beagle voyage (1839) with pictures of the Fuegians he brought to England. Lowest is "Jemmy Button" who was returned to Patagonia by Fitzroy only to see him return to his wild ways (as he realistically had to, to survive). Button met Allan Gardiner in the UK, but was implicated in the murder of missionaries in Tierra Del Fuego in 1860. The natives of Tierra Del Fuego were effectively extinct within 50 years.
