Illustration from 1872 of the Eratosthenes crater on the Moon. This impact crater is believed to have been formed 3.2 billion years ago. At the time this image was drawn it was thought that lunar craters originated from volcanic action, rather than impacts. Hence the suggestion of flowing lava around the rim of the crater.
