Wave-sculpted iceberg base. Close-up of the base of an iceberg, showing the shapes created by the action of the waves and the slow melting of the ice. Icebergs form as ice cleaves from glaciers and ice shelves where they meet the sea. Only a small proportion of an iceberg is visible above the surface of the water. As they melt, icebergs can form a wide variety of strange and beautiful shapes.
