Caption

Seabird tagging. Close-up of researchers adding a satellite tag to a seabird, designed to track its movements by sending signals to orbiting satellites. These tags are small enough to attach safely to the backs of seabirds such as guillemots, as shown here. Since guillemots are also diving birds the tag is sealed inside a waterproof casing. The positioning of the tag is critical so as not to impede either flying or swimming. The bird is placed in a fabric bag to enable careful handling. Monitoring of seabird populations is done in areas where they are in decline. One such area is south-west Greenland, where this photograph was taken.
