Ammonites in a Jurassic sea. Artwork of Asteroceras ammonites swimming amongst crinoids (feathery stalked organisms) and corals at the time of the Jurassic period (200 to 145 million years ago). Ammonites, now extinct, were marine invertebrate molluscs with a spiral shell. Most were less than 20 centimetres across.
