Caption

Slash-and-burn in the Congo Basin. Burnt trees and tree stumps in a clearing created by slash-and-burn, a technique used by rural subsistence farmers to clear forests to plant crops. Much of the canopy has been lost, allowing in sunlight for the crops. This practice devastates forest ecosystems and along with logging causes much of the deforestation in this region. Photographed in an area adjacent to Dzanga Sangha National Park, in the Central African Republic.
