Bromide displacement reaction. Bromine fumes created in a test tube by the displacement of bromide ions from sodium bromide with concentrated sulphuric acid. The common halides (chloride, bromide and iodide) all form colourless crystals. Each produces a different coloured gas when treated with concentrated sulphuric acid, hence this reaction is used to identify the halide.
