Statue of Buonarrotti Michelangelo (1475-1564) in the Loggia of the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Italian painter, architect, sculptor and poet. He was one of the most important Renaissance figures whose influence on the development of western art was unparalleled. Amongst his most significant works are the sculptures of the Pieta and David, the ceiling of Sistine chapel frescoes and the design of the Basilica of St. Peters in the Vatican, Rome.
