The Italian botanist Pier Antonio Micheli (1679-1737) is considered to be the founder of scientific mycology, the branch of biology concerned with fungi. He held the post of curator of the Botanic Garden in Florence and was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Pisa. The publication of his Nova Plantarum Genera brought into being the systemic classification of grasses, mosses and fungi.
