Francesco Redi (1627-97) from Arezzo, Italy, was the personal physician to the Medici Grand Dukes of Tuscany, a naturalist and poet. He challenged the commonly held belief in the spontaneous generation of living organisms and devised a famous experiment involving rotting meat to investigate the phenomenon. The results confirmed his theory and it was one of the first examples of an experiment where a control was used.
