Caption

Light micrograph of a section of lung tissue affected with pneumonia secondary to influenza. Influenza pneumonia is a rare but often fatal complication of an influenza virus infection. Here, the network of air sacs (stained blue) appears filled with a pus composed of fluid and white blood cells and is stained a lighter shade of blue than the lung tissue. Small blood vessels appear red in section. The presence of a large number of white cells may suggest a secondary bacterial infection due to Staphylococcus pyogenes. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
