Coal specimen and bark impression. Coal is formed from fossilised plants This sample of coal, from the Late Carboniferous, is 14 centimetres long. The regular pattern on the surface is the impression of the bark of a fossil Lepidodendron tree. This specimen is from Dudley, West Midlands, UK.
