Thiele tube. This apparatus is used to determine melting point temperatures. It is filled with oil and heated (bunsen burner at lower right). The sample being tested is in the capillary tub next to the mercury thermometer. As the oil heats, it circulates through the tube. As the sample melts, the temperature is recorded. This set-up avoids direct heating, and allows different oils (which can attain different temperatures) to be used depending on the melting point being measured.
