Lit splint hydrogen gas test. This test for hydrogen gas involves bringing together a test tube containing an unknown gas and a lit splint. If hydrogen is present in the test tube, it will ignite with a popping sound as it reacts with the oxygen in the air to form water. This result is different to that of other common gases produced in chemical reactions, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide.
