Ichthyostega. Computer artwork of an Ichthyostega around 350 million years ago during the Late Devonian period, in what is now the Canadian Arctic. On either side of the Ichthyostega are Rhacophyton ceratangium, ancient shrubs that are thought to be one of the earliest ferns. In the foreground are prehistoric arthropods: a millipede (left) and cockroaches (right). Ichthyostega was one of the earliest tetrapods and among the first terrestrial vertebrates. It was a descendent of lobe-finned fishes and ancestor of amphibians.
