William F. Durand (1859-1958). Portrait of the US naval officer and pioneering mechanical engineer William F. Durand, sitting in a chair. Durand is best known for his contributions to aeronautics and the development of aircraft propeller design in particular. He taught at the Michigan State College, Cornell University and Stanford University, USA; teaching Stanford's first course in Aeronautics.
