Artery lining. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the wall of a superficial artery. The inner layer of the wall (tunica intima) is composed of many single-layer endothelial cells (seen here). The slightly raised areas of the cells are the cell nuclei (oval). Below this layer is a connective tissue and muscle layer (tunica media, not shown) that keep the blood-vessels elastic and cushion the shock of the pulse. Magnification: x800 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
