Housefly eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the lenses (ommatidia, curved) that make up the compound eye of a housefly (Musca domestica). Each ommatidium is a 500 nm thick simple eye, which sends a signal to the fly's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x2,700 when printed 10cm wide.
