Wood ant. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the end of a European red wood ant's (Formica polyctena) abdomen, showing its acidopore, (lower centre). The acidopore produces formic acid, which wood ants can spray on their enemies. Some can squirt the acid several feet if alarmed. Magnification: x200 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
