Time ball, Royal Observatory, Greenwich, UK. This was the world's first public time signal. The time ball drops at exactly 13:00 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) every day and is visible from the River Thames. It was introduced in 1833 by the then Astronomer Royal, John Pond.
